So how do you position yourself to better meet their expectations?

If you’re going to have a chance at meeting the expectations of your customers, you need to start by understanding what they want. Sure, you can make some general assumptions. Customers typically like to experience good customer service and want the products and services they purchase to perform as advertised. Don’t just stop at superficial expectations though. Take the time to ask your customers what they want to see from your business. You can use customer satisfaction surveys and the feedback you get to start to get a better understanding of what your customers want from you.

Increase Convenience

One of the expectations you can assume all customers want met is the desire for convenience. Looking back, significant progress was made in terms of the convenience businesses were offering customers. Online shopping and curbside delivery options became far more widespread as people tried to maintain the recommended distance between one another. As people have become accustomed to that change, it’s become more of an expectation than a perk. After COVID-19, 86% of customers expect businesses to maintain the current levels of convenience. Don’t count on going back to how it was before.

Manage Expectations

All customers have expectations, but not all of them are necessarily reasonable. As a business, you need to take steps to manage the expectations people have of your company. Make sure you are able to deliver on your promises. Be transparent about your processes and what customers can expect from you as a result. This is how you do your part in helping your customers set accurate expectations. If you follow customer expectation management rules, you’re less likely to run into customers whose expectations are unrealistically high because of how you’ve built yourself up as a business.

Meeting customer expectations is an important task businesses need to be up to if they’re to find long-term success. Take steps to understand what your customers want, increase convenience for them, and manage their expectations.
